BCBA Exam Guide: Format, Score, Pass Rates (2026)

David Okafor

(BCBA, LBA)

David's younger brother was diagnosed with autism at four. And that changed...

Passing the BCBA exam is the moment a graduate student becomes a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. It is also one of the harder certification hurdles in the helping professions — and one that has gotten harder, not easier, over the past five years. This guide pulls together what current candidates need to know: format, passing score, recent pass rates, retake rules, and the study approach that actually works.

This is the 2026 picture. The BCBA exam transitioned to its 6th Edition Test Content Outline in January 2025, which means anything written before then may show outdated numbers.

What Is the BCBA Exam?

The BCBA exam is the final assessment administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to candidates seeking certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Candidates take it at a Pearson VUE testing center after their application is approved.

To sit for the BCBA exam, candidates must:

  • Hold a relevant master's degree
  • Complete BACB-verified graduate coursework aligned to the 6th Edition Task List
  • Complete the required supervised fieldwork hours
  • Have their application approved by the BACB
  • Receive an Authorization to Test

Once authorized, candidates have two years and eight total attempts to pass.

BCBA Exam Format: What to Expect

The 6th Edition BCBA exam consists of 185 multiple-choice questions. Each question presents four answer options with one correct answer.

  • Total questions: 185
  • Scored questions: 175 (count toward your result)
  • Pilot/unscored questions: 10 (used to test items for future exams)
  • Time limit: 4 hours
  • Delivery: Computer-based at Pearson VUE testing centers
  • Results: Pass/fail status delivered before you leave the center

You cannot tell which questions are scored and which are pilot items, so every question must be answered as if it counts. The BACB uses multiple exam forms — the candidate next to you may see different questions, but all forms are calibrated to comparable difficulty.

Is the BCBA Exam Multiple Choice?

Yes. Every question on the BCBA exam is multiple choice with four answer options and one correct answer. There are no essays, no fill-in-the-blank items, and no oral components. Many questions are scenario-based vignettes that require applying behavior analysis principles to clinical situations — not pure recall.

BCBA Exam Passing Score: What It Takes to Pass

The BCBA exam uses a scaled score of 400 out of 500 as the passing standard, set by subject-matter experts using the Modified Angoff method. The BACB does not publish a fixed percentage of correct answers required, because difficulty varies across forms. Most published estimates place the baseline at roughly 76–80% of scored questions correct.

Maximum Incorrect Questions Allowed on the BCBA Exam

On a 175-scored-question exam with a ~76% passing threshold, that translates to approximately:

  • Correct needed: ~133 of 175 scored questions
  • Maximum incorrect: ~42 scored questions

This is an estimate. The actual cut score adjusts based on form difficulty, and the BACB does not release raw scores — even to passing candidates. The official position is that the exam separates candidates into two groups: ready to practice, and not yet ready. Beyond that, the specific number is not published.

BCBA Exam Pass Rates: What the Numbers Say

According to the BACB's most recent Annual Data Report, BCBA exam pass rates have been declining for several years:

  • 2024 first-time pass rate: 54%
  • 2023 first-time pass rate: 56%
  • 2020 first-time pass rate: 66%
  • 2024 retake pass rate: 25%

In 2024, 9,911 candidates sat for the BCBA exam for the first time, and roughly 5,346 passed. The decline since 2020 reflects multiple factors: the 5th-to-6th Edition transition, rapid growth in graduate program enrollment, and increased emphasis on conceptual application over memorization.

The retake number deserves special attention. Only one in four retakers passes on subsequent attempts. This is not because the exam gets harder — the BACB confirms forms are calibrated to comparable difficulty across attempts — but because retakers often have foundational knowledge gaps that did not get addressed before the first attempt.

Pass Rates Vary Dramatically by Program

The BACB publishes annual BCBA exam pass rates for every university training program with six or more first-time candidates per year. In 2024, program-level rates ranged from 0% to 100%. The BACB explicitly recommends evaluating individual program rates rather than comparing them to the aggregate — and the aggregate itself is skewed by a handful of very large programs.

How Long Does the BCBA Exam Take?

The BCBA exam is administered in a single 4-hour block with no scheduled breaks. Candidates may take unscheduled breaks but the clock does not stop. Most preparation guides recommend pacing of roughly 75 seconds per question to leave buffer time for review.

How Many Hours to Study for the BCBA Exam?

There is no official BACB recommendation, but the consensus across exam prep providers and pass-rate analyses is:

  • Minimum effective study time: 100–150 hours
  • Typical study time: 200–300 hours
  • Recommended for retakers: 250+ hours, with targeted weak-domain work

That translates to roughly 3–4 months of consistent study at 15–25 hours per week. Candidates with strong graduate program coverage of the 6th Edition Task List may need less; candidates retaking the BCBA exam or working full-time often need more.

How to Start Studying for the BCBA Exam

A working study plan has three phases.

Phase 1: Foundation (Weeks 1–4). Build broad coverage of the 6th Edition Test Content Outline. Read or re-read primary texts — Cooper, Heron & Heward's Applied Behavior Analysis is the field-standard reference. Take a baseline mock exam early. The baseline is diagnostic, not predictive; its job is to surface weak domains.

Phase 2: Targeted practice (Weeks 5–10). Drill the weak domains identified by the baseline. This is where most candidates spend the bulk of their study time. High-difficulty domains commonly include experimental design, measurement, and ethics scenarios. Use spaced repetition (Anki, Quizlet) for terminology, and work through scenario-based vignettes for applied items.

Phase 3: Simulation and pacing (Weeks 11–14). Full-length timed mock exams under realistic conditions: 4 hours, no phone, no notes, no breaks beyond what you would take at Pearson VUE. The goal is stamina and pacing as much as content recall.

The Best BCBA Exam Study Tools

The most widely used and recommended tools across the field include:

  • The BACB's 6th Edition Test Content Outline — the official content blueprint, free to download
  • Cooper, Heron & Heward's Applied Behavior Analysis (3rd Edition) — the field-standard textbook
  • Pass the Big ABA Exam (PTB) — a widely used prep program with mock exams and study modules
  • BDS Modules — a long-standing computerized study tool used by many graduate programs
  • Study Notes ABA — flashcards, mock exams, and short-form prep

The right combination depends on the learning style. Most candidates use a primary textbook, one paid prep program, and a flashcard system.

What Mock Exam Is Closest to the BCBA Exam?

Among the most widely used mock exams:

  • Pass the Big ABA Exam (PTB) mocks are frequently cited as the closest in difficulty and question style to the actual BCBA exam. PTB's mocks are built around the current Test Content Outline and use scenario-based items.
  • BDS Module 8 final assessments are often described as harder than the real exam — useful for over-preparation.
  • Study Notes ABA mocks are shorter and lighter, useful for daily practice rather than full-length simulation.

No mock exam will exactly replicate the real BCBA exam. The BACB protects active items, and reputable prep providers write their own questions modeled on the published Test Content Outline.

BCBA Exam Retake Policy

If a candidate does not pass on the first attempt, BACB rules allow up to eight total attempts within a two-year authorization period. Key parameters:

  • Minimum wait between attempts: 30 days
  • Maximum total attempts: 8 within the 2-year window
  • What happens if you exhaust attempts or the window: the candidate must reapply for certification under whatever standards are in effect at that time, which may include updated coursework or fieldwork requirements

The score report delivered after a failed attempt breaks down performance by domain. The BACB explicitly recommends that retakers study the entire Test Content Outline rather than only the weak domains, because domains are interconnected and isolated study often leaves new gaps.

BCBA Exam vs. Bar Exam: A Reality Check

The BCBA exam is often compared to the bar exam in candidate conversations. The comparison has some merit, with important differences:

BCBA Exam Bar Exam (UBE)
Length 4 hours, single day 12+ hours over 2 days
Format 185 multiple choice Multiple choice + essays + practical
First-time pass rate (2024) 54% ~78% (varies by state)
Number of attempts 8 in 2 years Varies by state
Career impact of passing Required to practice as BCBA Required to practice law

Both exams require months of structured study. The BCBA exam is shorter but has a lower first-time pass rate than most state bar exams, which is partly why the comparison persists in candidate communities.

How Many People Pass the BCBA Exam on the First Try?

In 2024, 54% of first-time BCBA exam candidates passed. This is the lowest first-time pass rate since the BACB began publishing the data — down from 66% in 2020. Key takeaways:

  • Roughly one in two first-time candidates does not pass
  • Retake odds are significantly worse (25% in 2024)
  • Strong graduate programs achieve 90%+ pass rates; weaker programs sit below 30%
  • Program choice has a measurable impact on outcome — the BACB's program-by-program report makes this visible before enrollment

What the Numbers Mean for the Candidate Reading This

Pass rates are aggregates. They describe a population, not a person. A well-prepared candidate from a strong program who studies 250+ hours, uses high-fidelity practice materials, and works through scenario-based items has dramatically better odds than the 54% headline number. A candidate cramming for six weeks with outdated materials has worse odds.

The BCBA exam rewards depth of conceptual understanding over breadth of memorization. The 6th Edition emphasizes ethics, cultural humility, and applied scenarios more than earlier versions. Study strategies that worked for the 5th Edition are not directly transferable to today's BCBA exam.
